The PHS Boys Varsity soccer team paid tribute to their 11 outgoing players by defeating the Benjamin Russell Wildcats 3-0 Thursday night at Stanley-Jensen Stadium in Prattville Alabama. It took the Lions a little less than 5 minutes to score the opening goal of the game. John Bednarski scored off a pass from Luiz Braz to get things headed in the right direction. The Lions maintained possession for a significant portion of the first half, but hampered their scoring efforts by drifting offsides on many occasions. Riley Stachewicz closed out the half just as Bednarski opened it when he scored with a little less than 6 minutes remaining.
At halftime, the Lions celebrated the careers of 11 total players that left their mark on the program. Included in the recognition were: Kristopher Adams, Luiz Braz, Sean Burch, Andrew Cowart, Zach Cowart, Ben Hendricks, Carlos Lapena, Brett Middleton, Justin Pressor, Luis Santos and Cole Webster. These players have poured their heart, soul and a little blood into the program and their efforts are appreciated.
The Lions were content in the second half to move the ball around and probe the back line of the Wildcats defense. The Wildcats continued to run a very successful offsides trap against the front players for the Lions. Cosmin Diaconu left little chance for an offsides call when he launched a shot from 26 yards out into the upper 90 of the goal. That put a cap on the scoring and the Lions ran out the remaining time to secure another victory.
Following the match, Head Coach Rob Milner stated, “Absolutely delighted for all the seniors to get another win under our belt. We are unbeaten at home, kept a clean sheet and recorded our 13th win of the season. As a coach I am very pleased. The lads and I are thankful for the support, plus we’d like to thank the booster club for their efforts on a great night all around. See you all tomorrow night as we host the Montgomery Academy Varsity at 5:30p.m.”
