Prattville Cross Country Runners Beat the Clock at Jesse Owens Race

PHSXC PRs at Jesse Owens

The Prattville men’s and women’s cross country teams joined over 5000 runners and 200 teams this Saturday in Danville, Alabama to compete in four events at the Jesse Owens Classic.  The weather was cooler and dryer than usual creating an atmosphere where “eat my dust” was a literal sentiment.  Despite the grit in the air, Prattville proved its grittiness with 18 runners beating their personal records:

The morning kicked off at 9:40am for Prattville’s women’s team with their top 7 runners competing in the elite Gold race among 310 runners from 30 teams. The fastest time was 17:12 from a school in Knoxville, Tennessee.   Sophomore Kendra Jacobs led the Prattville team which scored as follows:

  • Kendra Jacobs (So.) –  22:56, 133 overall – PR
  • Susan Short (Jr.) – 23:03, 137 overall
  • Sophia Loy (So.) – 23:11, 140 overall – PR
  • Savannah Cowart (Sr.) – 23:17, 142 overall – PR
  • Katlyn Gappa (So.) –  23:45, 153 overall
  • Lindsay Gappa (So.) – 24:38, 169 overall
  • Karlie Lugen (So.) – 25:07, 175 overall

Shortly afterward at 10:45am, Prattville’s men’s varsity team competed in the men’s elite Gold race among 275 runners from 38 teams. The fastest time was 15:28 from Brentwood Academy.   Senior Deland Saville led the Prattville team which scored as follows:

  • Deland Saville (Sr.) – 17:57, 163 overall – PR
  • Lukas Davis (Sr.) – 18:21, 191 overall
  • Kevin Jacobs (Sr.) – 18:46, 209 overall
  • Nathan Bowden (Sr.) – 19:02, 227 overall
  • Chris Jones (So.) – 19:35, 242 overall – PR
  • Garner Phillips (So.) – 19:44, 246 overall
  • Jon McCandless (Sr.) – 19:55, 253 overall

The next event for Prattville was the men’s Varsity Red race that included an incredibly packed field of 594 runners from 48 schools. The first place time was 16:56 also from Brentwood Academy. Team captain, senior Reese Galloway led the Prattville team which scored as follows:

  • Reese Galloway (Sr.) – 19:28, overall 148 – PR
  • Aaron Glidden (So.) – 19:36, overall 173 – PR
  • Colby Askins (Sr.) – 19:47, overall 195 – PR
  • Ben Hicks (Jr.) – 19:49, overall 201
  • Jason Paul Ferguson (So.) – 21:33, 366 overall – PR
  • Raul Ortiz (So.) – 21:50, 398 overall – PR
  • Griffin Hyatt (So.) – 22:17, 437 overall

The final event for Prattville was the women’s Varsity Red race that included 310 runners from 30 schools. The first place time was 20:40 from Ravenwood HS.  Senior Beth McKee led the Prattville team which scored as follows:

  • Ally Cobern (Fr.) – 26:26, 199 overall – PR
  • Mary Ahern (Jr.) – 27:10, 217 overall
  • Morgan Tucker (So.) – 27:16, 220 overall
  • Olivia Stewart (Jr.) – 27:42, 236 overall
  • Kierah Beth Smith (Jr.) – 28:17, 246 overall
  • Elizabeth Dudle (Sr.) – 28:22, 248 overall

The Prattville XC teams will next compete Thursday October 13 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
