Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · PHS Boys Varsity Soccer Advances to Quarterfinals

The PHS Boys Varsity soccer team traveled to Duck Samford Stadium in Auburn, Alabama Tuesday night, and returned victorious after a hard fought 3-2 victory over the Auburn High Tigers.  The game had an inauspicious start for the Lions as they surrendered a goal within the first 17 seconds of the opening kickoff.  The game’s first half comprised of lightening fast end to end action.  A mere 3 minutes after the Tigers took the lead, the Lions found an equalizer off the foot of Cole Salle’.  John Bednarski ripped a shot from close range that beat the keeper but was cleared just before it reached the goal line.  Salle’ closed on goal from his Left Midfield positon, collected the loose ball and shot past the Tigers defender.  A short 5 minutes later, the Tigers scored their second goal as the Lions defense was still trying to find its form.  Undeterred by the pressure, Lions senior Cole Webster leveled the score again when he headed home a ball thrown in by Tylan Perine.  The teams went into the halftime break tied at 2 goals each.

The second half was an intense bit of action.  The Lions dominated possession, but had to fight off counter attacks repeatedly.  Senior defenders Ben Hendricks and Brett Middleton were called upon by Head Coach Rob Milner to slow the Tigers large, aggressive forwards.  The defenders were challenged but were able to parry the Tigers attacks.  With only 3 minutes remaining in the game, Lions Midfielder Carlos Lapena collected a ball in the middle of the field and slipped a pass behind the Tigers defense to Webster who dribbled toward goal and secured the victory by whipping a shot past the outstretched Tigers net minder.  The remaining minutes went by in a flash as the Lions attacked every loose ball until time expired.

Following the game, Coach Milner stated, “What a wonderful result for us tonight.  To reach the second round of the state playoffs for the first time in a while is so satisfying for this group who suffered defeat versus Auburn at this stage last year.  We played nervously at the opening but grew into the game after some early mistakes.  We played much better in the second half but credit to Auburn as they fought us all the way.  Over the 80 minutes I feel we deserved the victory.  We fought back three times tonight and it showed the will power we have to succeed.  Tough game ahead in the second round versus Davidson at home.  We expect a bumper crowd and the same enthusiastic following we had tonight at Auburn.  Thanks to all who came to watch a nail biter to say the least.”

The Lions will host Davidson this Saturday night, May 6, 2017 in Quarterfinal action at Stanley-Jensen Stadium.  Time is still to be determined.

Girls Varsity Softball · PHS Softball Wins Prattville Round Robin Tournament

Prattville Softball went 3-0 en route to winning the Prattville Round Robin championship this weekend at the PHS Softball Field. The Lady Lions were 3-0 with victories over Handley (Roanoke), Wetumpka, and Beauregard.

In the first game Friday night against Handley, the Lady Lions exploded for 6 runs in the 6th inning to pull away from the Tigers. Emma Hindi carried the big stick as she had 3 hits including a home run and a triple with 5 RBI’s. Melissa Townsend also had 3 hits on the day and Keitt Trammell contributed 2 RBI’s. Townsend recorded the win on the mound by scattering 6 hits and allowing 4 earned runs over 6 innings of work. Hindi garnered the save by pitching a scoreless last inning and striking out two Tiger batters.

The clash against the Wetumpka Indians saw the Lady Lions make a furious two-out seventh inning rally to steal the win. Down by 1 with two outs in the top of the 7th, McKenzie Harlow reached on an error followed by a single to left field by Trammell. Hindi then blasted her second home run of the tournament, a three run shot, over the left field fence to give Prattville the lead and ultimately the victory. Hindi and Trammell had two hits each to lead the Lady Lions at the plate. Townsend notched the win pitching the final two innings allowing only one hit and striking out two.

Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · PHS Boys Varsity Soccer Ends Regular Season On A High Note

The PHS Boys Varsity soccer team won their sixteenth game this season and remained undefeated at home after they defeated McGill-Toolen Tuesday night at Stanley-Jensen Stadium by a score of 2-0.  It took 18 minutes for the Lions to get on the scoreboard.  Carlos Lapena sent a through ball to John Bednarski behind the defense.  Bednarski collected the pass and battled two defenders for possession before he split them and ripped a shot past the goalie for a 1-0 lead.  During the remainder of the opening half, both teams battled hard and had several near miss opportunities.  McGill-Toolen struggled to crack Head Coach Rob Milner’s defensive combination on the back line.  Donovan Renn and Tylan Perine manned the outside back positions while Dawson Davis and Ben Hendricks controlled the middle of the back line.  Midfielders Lapena, Riley Stachewicz  Nick Montgomery and Cosmin Diaconu condensed the middle of the field with constant pressure on the McGill-Toolen players.

In the second half, the Lions front line continued to pressure the McGill-Toolen back line.  Cole Webster and Cole Salle’ continued to widen the field and create space for Bednarski and Stachewicz to work.  After several near miss attempts, Perine sent a beautiful diagonal pass to Webster who unselfishly slipped the ball in front of the goal for Bednarski to hammer home.   The 2-0 lead would prove insurmountable for the McGill-Toolen players to overcome.

The Lions completed their regular season with a record of 16-5-1.  They will begin the playoffs on the road next Tuesday night, May 2, 2017, at Duck Samford Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.  Kickoff is set for 6pm.
